Why I switched to Ubuntu Linux and why you should too!

I recently made the switch from Windows to Linux (Ubuntu 22.04), and I have to say, I'm loving it! If you're still using Windows and are thinking about trying something new, I highly recommend giving Ubuntu a try. Here are some of the best features that make it a great alternative to Windows:

  • It's sleek and aesthetic: The default desktop environment, Unity, is visually appealing and easy to navigate, with a dock on the left side with some application icons on it. This dock allows you to quickly launch your frequently used programs.

(I set the dock to the right so it fits my background better.)

  • Powerful terminal: Ubuntu's terminal has advanced features, including the ability to create aliases for frequently used commands to save time and improve memorization.
For example, an alias for the sudo dpkg -i the command could be "install".
Then, you could use the install command instead of typing the full sudo dpkg -i command each time.

  • It's free and open-source: Ubuntu is a free operating system that is developed and maintained by a community of volunteers. This means you can download and use it for free, and you also have the freedom to modify and distribute the source code.

  • It's customizable: You can choose from a variety of desktop environments, including GNOME, KDE, and Xfce, and there are thousands of themes and icons available to customize the look of your operating system.
You can also install and use a wide range of apps from the official Ubuntu repositories, as well as from third-party sources.

  • It's developer-friendly: Ubuntu comes with a wide range of tools and libraries pre-installed, including the GCC compiler, Python, and Git. It's also easy to set up a development environment on Ubuntu, with support for various programming languages and frameworks.

  • Unity Lens: The Unity Lens is a feature that allows you to search for and access a wide range of content, including files, apps, and online resources, directly from the dash. You can use it to search for and launch apps, find files and documents, and access web resources like Wikipedia or Google.

  • It's highly secure: Linux-based operating systems are known for being more secure than their counterparts, as they are less prone to viruses and malware. Ubuntu 22.04 takes this a step further by regularly releasing updates to fix any vulnerabilities and improve security.

In conclusion, I am very satisfied with my switch to Ubuntu 22.04. I believe it is a fantastic operating system which caters to both casual users and developers. If you're looking to try something new or are unhappy with your current operating system, I highly recommend giving Ubuntu a chance.
